Fixing Failed to Create D3d Device on Lenovo Thinkpad T61 Laptop

Posted by: admin In: Lenovo Laptops

Lenovo Thinkpad Series of T61 laptop that has an error message appears
failed to create D3D device” when play game of Left 4 Dead, may it
cause of graphic driver’s problem. This error occurs while ones double
click on the Left 4 Dead icon to start running. If you’re sure that
you was installed the newest graphic driver already, then you need to
check the video setting.

This error’s issue, so far it was found in all Lenovo Thinkpad Series
of T61, T61p, and also R61 which it has Nvidia Quadro NVS 140m or
Nvidia Quadro FX 570M as built in video. In order to make Left 4 Dead
with Forceware 175.97 running on that Lenovo Thinkpad Series above,
here are the way you need to do:

Go to your L4D folder and open the subfolder called “left4dead”,
Open “cfg” folder, there you should see the text file called “videodefaults”,
Change “1″ to “0″ under “setting.fullscreen”, and save it.

Now you should able to play the game of Left 4 Dead with Forceware
175.97 on Lenovo laptop. By use the way above game will run in a
window mode. So if you want to play Left 4 Dead running in full screen
mode, you can simply go to the game option and changes video setting
to full screen mode.

hey B!

I figured it out. It turns out there’s 2 files that you need to change the “setting.fullscreen” from “1″ to “0″

The 2 files are: video & video defaults

try it out. It’s an awesome game! ((:

Good luck!

Zhong. I had that problem too when i re-installed L4D on my laptop.

So er… try to edit either ONE “video.txt” or “video default.txt”

1) Try and play around with the “setting.fullscreen” on these two files..

What works for me was that I’ve edited the “setting.fullscreen” to “0″ on video.txt file..

I assume that since the update on forceware from 175.97 to 176.93 has cause the values to change back automatically..

I’m not really a computer whizz.. but i hope this helps.. Good luck! :)

>> Failed to create ….(..)

Right-click on L4D in your steam menu, ->properties -> launch options and type in “-windowed”

this far, it worked for me…

“Game on!!!” ^^

Guys i found a solution : You have to edit both files Video and Videodefault => setting.fullscreen” from “1″ to “0″

If Left 4 dead reset setting.fullscreen to 1, just right click on both files and check “Read-only”.

Have fun !!!

I tried to reset the video.txt and the videodefault files to setting.fullscreen to 0 from 1 but it just defaulted back after trying unsuccessfully to launch l4d. I set the files to read only but now it’s just a little window, which sucks. I tried the -windowed mehtod as well but same thing. How do I get fullscreen again and get it to work?

Hi guys,

I got the same problem and using “-windowed” option worked (you can then switch back to full screen through the game menus).
But then, I faced another problem: the game was freaking dark. I know it’s meant to be dark but here, everything was a shadow: objects, wall, characters, etc.
I finally got rid of all problems by being able to install the latest driver updates for my card (Nvidia Quadro FX 570M).
Finding the right drivers on my laptop has been a pain. I finally found a great site that you can use to get all your latest drivers: http://www.touslesdrivers.com/index.php?v_page=29
Once the last beta version installed, no more d3d device failing (thus no more booting using windowing option) and no more excessive darkness. Everything runs smoothly.
Hope that helps.
