I have a Lenovo 6459-CTO (T61) running Vista-64. The Nvidia chipset overheated and fried the motherboard. I replaced it with a complete new motherboard based on the Intel GM965 chipset. I performed this change on all three keys and 'presto' System Update works again.

Thanks.

This works perfectly. I have it working on my aspire 8920
Getting the CineDash Media Console and Launch Buttons working
If you have problems with either the CineDash Media Console or Launch buttons then you will be happy to hear that the solution for fixing these is easy!
The first thing that you will need to do is install the “Launch Manager” which can be downloaded off the Acer website. Go to www.acer.com and click the service support, then driver download. Go to your model. Download the Launch Manager here (hosted here) or go to the acer site and find it there. The filename should be “Kilimanjaro_v2.0.00_Vistax32×64_XPx32×64.zip” the version of Launch Manager under the Windows Vista operating system .This will get the Email, Web and Empowering Technology buttons working with their default settings. If you need to change what the buttons do, you can launch the application named “Launch Manager” in the start menu.
Uninstall any previous version of Launch Manager
The solution to my problem was to get the Launch Manager to run in compatibility mode for Windows Vista Service Pack 2.
Unzip. Explore the new folder and right-click Setup.exe.
To do this go to the Launch Manager Install directory (C:\Program Files\Launch Manager ), right-click on “setup.exe”, select the “troubleshoot compatibility” tab, check the “Troubleshoot program” check box and then click “The program worked in earlier versions of Windows but won’t install or run now”. Then select “Windows Vista Service Pack 2”. Then click “Start” program. Now everything should work properly! It will install. But don’t reboot yet!
Now locate and explore the freshly installed folder in your program files directory – (probably C:\Program Files (x86)\Launch Manager or C:\Program Files\Launch Manager depending on if you are running 64-bit or 32-bit)
right-click on “LManager.exe”, select the “troubleshoot compatibility” tab, check the “Troubleshoot program” check box and then click “The program worked in earlier versions of Windows but won’t install or run now”. Then select “Windows Vista Service Pack 2”. Then click “Start” program. Now everything should work properly! It will install.
Reboot and enjoy properly synced volume, and fully functioning buttons.

Hewlett Packard knew that the presario V6000 wireless was "more likely" burn out to due to a manufacture error that had to do with cooling. The wireless card is attached to the mainboard and the on/off indicator light shows orange after it burns out. HP set up a "fix on failure event" and gave an extended warranty, which they said that they used "due diligence" in informing owners of this model. This 1 year extended warranty began in November 2008 and lasts only 1 year past the first anniversary of the date of purchase.

You can pay them between $259 and $398 to repair their defect if your computer's wireless burns out after the extended warranty period. They will not repair or replace unless it burns out during their extended warranty period.

All of this straight from a HP quality care manager today, 2/8/2010.

(By the way, this model also had an issue with the battery losing charge due to software and they sent out a patch link to repair it. They do KNOW who has purchased these machines due to registration records.)

So:
1. They know they produced and sold a defective device.
2. They made a token attempt (due diligence) to contact some owners and claim no responsibility if you were not made aware of the problem.
3. They will only repair the device for free if it burns out within a window and after that you must pay.

What should you do? Cut your losses and just buy a wireless USB device? Continue to operate this machine with a burned out component attached to the mainboard and wonder if you risk further castastophe? Pay to have it repaired? What ever you do...I suggest you back up your files immediately and then regularly!

But here's the real question:
Are you going to purchase another HP/Compaq laptop?
Caveat Emptor!!!!!

If you dont have the restore disks or your drive wont restore i found a set on ebay for £5, however if you are using a new drive then you will need to use a win98 boot disk, fdisk, format and sys the drive then reformat it using xp to an NTFS format.

then run the restore from the disks.
